What reharm is this?
I’m playing through a song that is in the key of G. The normal chord progression is just G to D, but the reharm is G/C to Emin7/B to Bflat maj7 to Dsus to D. The progression sounds good and the melody note at that point for my question in the song is an A. My question is what is the theory behind the Bflat maj7, or is there any theory behind it, and the chord works because it shares two notes from the D chord – the D and the A. Thank you for the insight!

Hey Brian,
The b3 Maj 7 is a modal interchange chord meaning it’s borrowed from MINOR harmony. Fun huh?! The two chords before are just a little chromatic motion walk down into that. C, B, Bb then to 5 chord. Very cool! Thanks for sharing. I’ll have to mess around with this myself!
