Voicing 1-10 for short stabs when you can’t reach the 10th
(Reposting from general discussions; apologies for the duplicate)
I love the Tune Analysis section at the end of the Solo Piano specialty course — it really ties things together, particularly the LH components. However, many of the LH shells, particularly on the upbeat, are 1-10. For those of us that can’t reach the 10th, recommendation has been to roll/pedal. But when doing short ‘stabs’ on the upbeat, this isn’t a good approach. And a simple 1-3 shell is often too far down in the register to sound good. What’s a better way for us to voice a 1-10 so low in the register for short bass shells when we can’t reach the 10th? 5-10? 1-7?
