Voiceleading Triads – moving between root and inversions
Hi, all – I am not sure if this is the correct place to post this…..hopefully it is!
I have a question that I am not entirely sure how to ask —
I am working on Level Zero, Lesson 5, step 4 on voice leading triads.
I am working to understand how to move best between chords using inversions. Is there a pattern in terms of inversion use when moving from one to another? For instance, does root always lead to 2nd inversion? and does 1st inversion always lead to Root? Does 1st inversion always lead to root?

Hi Mary,
If you’re voiceleading through the circle of 4ths with triads will take on a certain path. Root will go to 2nd inversion back to root and so on. But with 7th chords, sometimes you do have two options and it’s better not to think too hard about it. Just choose whatever option is close by but definitely look to see what options you have. i’m on Lesson 4, triad inversions, and was wondering what is an effective way of learning these? Is it to focus on the root, or always read when practicing, or practice until memorized

HI Domenico,
I would try to learn the shapes of the chords as best as possible through the numbers without reading. The less you have to read the practice exercises to practice, the faster you’ll get better.
Try to anchor the inversions by knowing where the chord tones are in the chord. for example 1st inversion is 351. Trying to spot where the root is on top always helps then building down. But also whatever helps you memorize. Lots of repetitions are good. Practice these until about 75% because the 7th chords are much more important.

You could try applying some of them to a standard you know very well and when you do this often enough you will learn them (it will “click”).
