Tritone sub vs using extensions
Hello,
I was wondering if a tritone sub isn’t essentially the same thing as when I apply extensions to my V chord? Let’s say: in the key of C, if I play rootless G7(b9b13) over G, isn’t it the same as if I played rootless G7(b9b13) over Db? The tritone does sound a bit more pronounced, but is it really so much (sonically) different if you play it in the context of a song? I understand it’s just another way of looking at chords, but why tritones are so “hype” when I could just stick with extensions. Could anyone explain to me the logic behind using tritone subs? Thank you.
