Transpose melodies on the fly
Posted by Vadim on November 2, 2023 at 1:36 pmHow do you learn melodies to play songs in other keys, do you only use the key as a reference?
Do you have any other tactics?

Hi Vadim, Do you want to learn melodies or, do you want to play songs in other keys? It is not clear. If you learn a lot of tunes, you will learn many melodies. Any standard can be transposed to another key. If you want, you can learn 1 standard by heart and play it in 2 different keys. That will give you chord mastery.

Great questions Vadim! I always found it helpful to analyze the progressions of the chords and think by numbers. For example if the tune starts out 2-5-1-6, then I know I just have to play a 2-5-1-6 in another key. I try to do the same thing for melodies. Figure out how the notes relate to the chords by numbers. So if the melody outlines the chord 1-3-5-7 then I can just play that same sequence of notes in another key. It is quite difficult to get the hang of and even I have to practice quite a bit to do this! Hope this helps!

Hi Suzanna, hi Brendon, <div>
thank you for the replies!
Yes exactly it was for transposing tunes, and i practice chords accomp in different keys, with the Melodie of tunes.
I try it with the number in keys but sometimes i was not sure if there are other technics or tricks to help if the melody gets out of the key vor the tune changes the key ….
Thank you!
