Songwriting and accompanying a singer with only a piano.
Posted by Trevor Farrell on February 28, 2025 at 2:31 pmMy name is Trevor Farrell. I am a songwriter in the style of the Great American Songbook. Jazz and blues not show tunes. I have been a member of JPS since 2014, when it first started. This year I hope to post a series of songs that I have written. All in the above style. Maybe one a month. I am not a singer, I wouldn’t even say I am a jazz pianist, but I perform these tasks in order to demonstrate the songs I write. I will post the first one as soon as I work out how to do it. I think this is the correct Forum for my contributions.

I have just tried to load a QuickTime film of me performing my song. The result said Max file size allowed of 16MB. My file size is 250MB. It looks like my quest has ended before it has started. So, unless someone can explain to me how to load a short film to JPS, I am not sure if I can go any further.

Trevor, I would love to hear your tunes. Maybe Brenden can help you out with the technical problems.

Hi Tom, Thanks for the contact. I needed a rest but now am back the case. I think I have worked out how to do it.

Hi Tom, all my tunes are ready now. There are 8 in all. It took longer than I thought. Now I must work out what the best was is of presenting them. There are 8 mp4’s. Each has a spoken introduction, followed by me accompanying myself at the piano performing the song. Then there is an analysis of the song. Each presentation is about 6 minutes long. I am just awaiting a response from the support as to how to load them. Then I saw your comment and thought I would reply.

I have posted content before, maybe 5 times. Not in the last 5 years however. I think I have only seen 1 other person post content in the 10 years I have been a member. If the administration gives some guidance on how to post, I will do it. Right now it is too dificult.

Hi Trevor,
I have posted my compositions here by compressing the audio size as there is a limit or else it will not load here. Did you hear back from administration about how to do it?

In case you still need to know how to post, these are the instructions I was given:
Upload to the audio to Google Drive, Dropbox, SoundCloud and then just post the link.

Hello Suzana, I am trying a different approach now. I started from today. I am hoping to load them on utube, and then post the links to them on utube, for people who want to see them. That is the plan, anyway. My material is all film not just sound. I wanted people to see me playing the piano, not just hear it. Also I have all the lyrics included in the films. As usual non of these things go as planned, so I will see over the next few days.

I am not sure if the film or video makes it too large for posting here. I hope you can get your music posted.

Hi Susanah, If you want to hear what I am doing regarding my songwriting please send an email to seniortrevorfarrell49@gmail.com. That is my email address. I am going to upload “unlisted” videos to Youtube. Only those who have the link can see them. If you want the link I need your email address to send it to. By the way, I have listened to both of your compositions. It is a great achievement to be able to do that. The problem for me is that as soon as I have finished listening to them I cannot remember them. That is why the structure of the Great American Songbook is so powerful. The compositions is very easy to remember. I go through all of this.

Hello Susana, maybe I wasn’t very clear about my approach. I will explain. I am forming a YouTube channel. I will post each film on YouTube. There is no problem with size or anything else on Youtube. I will then send you the link to the film, and you can watch it on Youtube. That is the plan. I think It will take a few days. It will be called “An introduction into how to write songs in the style of the Great American Songbook, jazz and blues not show tunes”. It is information you will not see anywhere else.

Hi Susanah, this is the link to the first of my videos. It would be much easier if you had an email I could send it to.
