Lesson Plan:

Improv

Select tune of your choice
Step 1: Analyze melody (What chord tones are being outlined? How does it navigate the complicated sections?, improvise variations on melody
Step 2: Examine chord changes (highlight common tones, note where key chord tones change), improvise based on the relationships you discover
Step 3: Map out scales (practice up and down over each chord), improvise using scalar passages to connect melody notes and key chord tones
Bonus: Develop patterns (1-2-5, 4-5-1-2, etc…) and use them to “skate” over the changes
