Lesson Plan:
Improv
– Practice improvising over Satin Doll with 8th note rhythmic groupings. The ultimate goal is to develop a constant 8th note flow over the changes.
– Remember to always practice with metronome and keep note of how fast you are able to play with no mistakes. A mistake is breaking the rhythmic flow, not playing an “incorrect” note!
Step 1: 4 eighth notes followed by a half note and a full measure of rest
Step 2: 4 eighth notes followed by a half note (no measure of rest in between)
Step 3: 8 eighth notes followed by a whole note (or a half note then half measure rest)
Step 4: Constant 8th notes
